A live show can be a hazardous thing to try and capture what with crowd noise from recording in the back of the house to distortion from questionable equipment. What makes this release, composed of somewhat compromised lo-fi recordings, worth while is the interesting performances of these various incarnations of Short-term Memory. Not to mention the inclusion of a number of songs that have never been available to the public before.

4 versions of the band are documented here. Because of the ever changing membership of the band the sound & song style kept evolving.
_______________________________________________________
Version 1 - 6-29-1983 Songs 1 through 7
This is the original band's sole performance. These songs were recorded at the band's friend, Dave Old's, Loft. The sound should have been pristine as everything went directly into the mixer and out to the speakers. However, the wiring in the building left a lot to be desired. There are many pops and crackles throughout these recording so what you have here is inadvertent glitch electronica. Jim ran the sound from the stage and the speakers were in the back of the house so the sound that the band and audience heard was the same. 16 mm films were projected behind the stage (courtesy of the Kansas City Public Library) for visual effect. The recordings for this performance were taken directly off of the sound board.

This version of the band consisted of:
Kevin Dooley - Your weird voice (& not so weird voice on The Call) & random factors (main sequencer and bottom end, noises, squawks and melody).
Jon Paul - Your serious voice & synchronization (push button drumming, arpeggiator & sequencer driving, plus free-form bottom end and additional melody)
Jim Skeel - Your pretty voice & random factors (melody, & bass+ noises & arpeggiations).

Version 2 - circa 1984 Songs 8 through 11
These songs were recorded at the old VFW Hall across from the Tower of Gundam. This time out the band had graduated to live drums but still did not use amplifiers. Instead, the instruments were run directly into the board (sound run by Kevin Ink) and pumped back both through the PA for the audience and monitors for the band. These recordings are by Tim Higgins utilizing PZM mikes at the back of the hall.

Members at this time were:
Cat Cooper - Synthesizer and Vocal
Robert Duckworth - Fretless Bass Guitar
Jon Paul - Drums
Jim Skeel - Clavinet, Synthesizer, and Vocal

Version 3 - circa 1985 / 1986 Songs 12 through 14
These songs were recorded at a couple of venues, Harling's Upstairs (song 12) and The Grand Emporium. Sound mixing and the recording of the GE show was by Kevin Dooley and (probably) at Harling's as well. The GE show featured backing tapes of processed voices & sounds that were played along with the band. These sounds were on a 45 minute tape which was approximately the length of a set. They ended up being a random element in the music as the order of the songs changed every night.

Members for these performances were:
Robert Duckworth - Fretless Bass Guitar
Jon Paul - Drums
Jim Skeel - Clavinet, Organ, Synthesizer & Loops

Version 4 circa 1987 - Songs 15 through 21
The down and dirty show This performance was at Epitaph, a venue more in line with Goth Bands than the weirdness that Short-term Memory was presenting that night. This was a small space so a PA was not needed as there were no vocals mics nor were the drums being miked. All of the amplifiers were stacked close together behind the band and the saxophone mic was run through the keyboard amp. The idea (again) was that everyone in the room would hear the same thing. The backing tapes were used at this show as well. These songs were recorded by Tim Higgins.

The members this time around were:
Robert Duckworth -Whammy Bass Guitar, & 2nd guitar solo on Jack Hammers in Love
Jill Fetterman - Alto Sax
Max Maksimik - Guitar
Jon Paul - Drums
Jim Skeel - Organ, Sampler, Synthesizer, Loops & Tapes.

Original recordings were done as noted above. Editing, production, & mastering by Jim.
